Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has earmarked a potential January move for West Ham’s Senegalese midfield enforcer Mohamed Diame, reports Sports Direct News.
The Senegalese 26-year-old reportedly has a £3.5m release clause, which is well within Liverpool’s budget.
With Steven Gerrard only just coming back from his hamstring injury, and Joe Allen out for the next few weeks, Liverpool are short in the middle of the park. Diame hasn’t had the best season for West Ham, but his versatility and physical attributes mean he will strengthen Liverpool’s squad and their hopes of a top four finish.
Diame can play as a midfield anchorman, a box-to-box player, or even in a more advanced position behind a striker. For Liverpool though, he would likely be used as a bench option, or in rotation with Lucas or Jordan Henderson should either of the two stars need a rest.
Diame arrived in the Premier League at Wigan back in 2009, before moving to West Ham on a free transfer at the start of last season. In that time, Diame has been a fixture in the Hammers team, making 58 appearances in all competitions and scoring five goals.
