The agent of Liverpool centre back Martin Skrtel has stated that the Slovakian wants to stay at Anfield.
Martin Skrtel’s agent Karol Csonto has reiterated his player’s desire to fight for his place at Anfield.
“Martin to move away from Liverpool? I specifically say that Skrtel has never said he wants to go away, then it depends on the Liverpool market because everything could change,” Csonto told TuttoMercato, as reported by Sky Sports.
“It’s true that the last two seasons were difficult but in football it can happen.
“Napoli? I think they haven’t the financial possibilities to take him. Liverpool has not decided a price because they don’t intend to sell the player. Anyway, I don’t think that Napoli can afford his wage.”
Speculation started to grow after that the 28-year-old Slovakian started only three league games after the New Year.
Skrtel was reportedly tempted by a move to the Italian side to reunite with Rafa Benitez, the manager who brought him to Merseyside.
Liverpool have been repeatedly linked with defenders all summer following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.
With question marks over the futures of Skrtel and Sebastian Coates, Agger could be left as the only remaining senior centre back from last season at the club, though the Reds have brought in veteran Manchester City defender Kolo Toure as a backup option.
Carragher’s retirement gives Skrtel the opportunity to win his place back in the side – and persuade Brendan Rodgers that he doesn’t need to enter the transfer market again for further reinforcement.
