Liverpool look to have missed a step with Steven Gerrard, and could have tied their captain down to a new deal if they hadn’t have hesitated…
Steven Gerrard would have signed a new contract last summer if Liverpool offered him one, but things have changed since then, according to Caught Offside.
With the Liverpool captain having recently retired from international duty with England to focus on Liverpool, he claims he would have been happy to sign a new contract over the summer. The club never offered him a new deal however, and Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has since spoken to Gerrard about limiting his game time.
“Yes, if a contract had been put in front of me in pre-season I would have signed it,” he said.
“I’d just retired from England to concentrate all my efforts on Liverpool. I didn’t want my club games to be tailored.”
The 34-year-old has no intention of becoming a bit part player at the club, and knows things will only get worse next season.
