Premier League champions steal ahead of Reds in race for Fernando…
Manchester United have stolen a march on Premier League rivals Liverpool in the race to sign Porto midfielder Fernando, reports Portuguese publication A Bola.
Liverpool recently missed out on Mohamed Salah to Chelsea, and were similarly beaten to the signing of Willian in the summer by the same club.
The Reds were strong favourites to sign Brazilian anchorman Fernando this January though, but United, who are similarly desperate to sign midfield reinforcements, are now the side expected to bring in the 26-year-old.
Fernando provides his team with a defensive platform which enables the more attacking players to get forward and create. Liverpool midfielder Lucas currently does this job, but with him injured, they were apparently keen on Fernando as a short-term (and potentially long-term) replacement.
United though are crying out for midfield strengthening, with doubts over Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini’s long-term suitability in the centre of the park. Ryan Giggs is in his forties, and Michael Carrick himself is now in his thirties, too.
Fernando would be available for a bargain €8m fee, as his contract expires at the end of the season, and equally can provide cover at centre-half.
