Marseille playmaker Mathieu Valbuena wants to test his mettle in a foreign league…
Liverpool and Arsenal have been alerted to comments French midfield maestro Mathieu Valbuena’s made to French television, regarding a possible summer departure, the Metro reports.
The 29-year-old French playmaker is known for his brilliant creative streak in the final third, and despite his diminutive frame, he has the ability to split defences with his intelligent, slick passes.
“A departure? To discover something else next season could be interesting,” Valbuena told French television.
“It’s been eight years since I am here at l’OM. I’ve never hidden that an experience abroad tempts me. We’ll see,” he said.
The Metro reckons both the Premier League giants have been keen on Valbuena, who has won 30 caps for France, for a long time.
He’s expected to be in the France squad for next summer’s World Cup, too, such is his versatility in any one of three attacking midfield positions. He can play wide, cutting in and joining in with the midfield, or in a more pivotal no.10 role behind a lone striker.
Arsenal currently have a wealth of attacking midfield options, with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky, Santi Cazorla, Serge Gnabry, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all competing for two or three positions, it seems unlikely they’ll sign Valbuena.
Liverpool on the other hand have only Coutinho as a no.10 option, and Valbuena could provide a rotation or replacement option for the young Brazilian.
