Illarramendi was one of Europe’s most exciting young players following his breakthrough season with Basque club Sociedad, but despite fleeting glimpses of his quality at the Bernabeu, he has never quite established himself in the first team.
The 24 year-old could look to move on in January with an eye towards breaking into Vicente del Bosque’s Spain squad, with Liverpool and Arsenal both believed to hold an interest in Illarramendi.
