Tottenham crashed out of their second knockout competition in less than a week after they suffered a clear 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday evening. Earlier on Thursday, they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup semi-final on penalties after they were 2-0 down after just 35 minutes.
Pochettino decided to make several changes ahead of the Palace game and the outcome was not positive. Although they did create some serious chances, they were unable to past keeper Speroni. That was the first win since 2016 for Crystal Palace against Tottenham.
Crystal Palace, on the other hand, claimed another big scalp having won already against Manchester City and Tottenham in this season after drawing against Arsenal and Manchester United.
Surely for Roy Hodgson’s men remaining in the Premier League it is the primary objective but those results and the performance that is coming with it could give them a significant confidence boost for the remainder of the season.
Brilliant news for Palace is the return of Connor Wickham who has been with injury problems in the last couple of years. He has scored his first goal in 799 days in what has been an emotional moment for him and the team.
But what is next for Spurs now?
We have asked the question to BestbettingSites.Online football betting expert John Pentin: ‘If you being realistic the FA Cup was the only chance for Spurs to win a trophy this season after they failed to reach the EFL Cup last Thursday. Pochettino’s men are nine points behind Liverpool in the Premier League and it is not credible they will be able to recover those especially after they were defeated at home by Manchester United a couple of weeks ago.
In the Champions League they could try to go as far as possible but again being realistic would be already good for them if they can overcome Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the tournament. With Harry Kane and Dele Alli injured things look gloomy and yesterday they failed to score for the third time in 36 games this season.
It looks like Mauricio Pochettino has already his head somewhere else probably at Old Trafford. It doesn’t believe he has a squad at the moment that is capable of winning titles and in his opinion, he is already doing as much as he can by securing Champions League football.
In the clash against Crystal Palace he made several changes probably concerned by the Premier League midweek round. French winger N’Koudou was given his first start since December 2017and although he had some good chances to score, he failed to impress. To make things worse, Kyle Walker-Peters gifted the home side with a penalty with a clear handball.
Spurs did well in the second half but Speroni made good saves. Tottenham are now out from the FA Cup before even the fifth round and this is more frustrations to fans as the title chances are gone after suffering two home defeats.
Spurs are waiting to leave Wembley to go to their new stadium but they cannot be in Wembley for Cup finals which looks horrendous. It looks like as if Tottenham are not able to do the next step that is what fans are expecting. Surely Pochettino has done a very good job in the last few years but yet he is failing somehow both in the transfer market and in the pitch to add what is needed for Spurs to become a winning side.
For a club like Tottenham being in the top four should be a given and maybe a departure of Pochettino towards United might not be dreadful news after all for Spurs fans, as long as he will be replaced by a winning manager. It is likely that Tottenham board will start looking at options now that not much to cheer in this season especially if, as expected, they will be eliminated from the Champions League by Dortmund.’
Pochettino said that they have to stay positive even with the recent results. Despite the disappointment, the Argentine made the point that they are still in two competitions: they have a good position in the Premier League and also still in the Champions League which is a fantastic achievement for the club.
When asked about the fact that people want to win trophies he said that they have to keep strong and that they are doing so well if we look realistically. He also added that winning a title like the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup is also to have that bit of luck and it is not only down to the quality of the squad. Pochettino also said that he doesn’t believe a trophy of this kind will take the club to the next level. This was probably quite clear in the line up that the FA Cup wasn’t on top of his priorities. The Argentinean believes that winning a trophy will build your ego but nothing else. For Tottenham, he said, the most important thing is to be in the top four and secure Champions League football. The changes he made were justified by the crazy fixture schedule and he didn’t have many choices.
Not everyone was reassured by Pochettino’s worlds and Jamie O’Hara who played for Spurs for six years after coming through the academy wasn’t particularly impressed.
He said on Twitter that it was challenging to watch playing Spurs at the moment. The season looked very promising at the beginning but the lack of signings and injuries mean that they are set for another very average season once again.
Tottenham will have a very difficult February as they will have to also play against Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League.
‘Pochettino’s chances of winning a trophy this season are almost non-existent as they are basically out from the Premier League title race and their squad it is significantly too small to cause a serious threat in Europe’ concluded John Pentin.
