Star New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson will be sidelined for up to 10 days with a shoulder injury.
The 24-year-old suffered the injury while fielding in the Black Caps’ opening Test against Sri Lanka.
New Zealand will play four one-day internationals against Sri Lanka over the next 11 days, with Williamson expected to return for the clash against the visitors in Dunedin on January 23.
Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said now was the best time for Williamson to begin his recovery.
“Kane is obviously a very important player for us and we need to give his shoulder the time to fully recover,” said Hesson.
“He’s played a lot of cricket of late and this window will allow him to get back to 100 percent.”
New Zealand play Sri Lanka in their second ODI in Hamilton on Tuesday.
