It wasn’t obvious in 2004 that the Reds would slump down the league during the decade.
Having failed to qualify for the Champions League since 2009 – despite winning the competition in 2005 and reaching another final in 2007 – Liverpool fans must be wishing for the glory days of the early-2000s.
This may sound odd as in 2004 Reds supporters were actually wishing for the form at Anfield seen in the 1970s and 80s, but if they knew what was around the corner many would probably have appreciated the significance of Rafael Benitez signing Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso.
The Spanish pair joined the club on August 20 2004 and both went onto become club heroes in their own right, with Alonso the standout performer that scored the equalising goal against AC Milan in the dramatic 2005 final and made a big money move to Real Madrid in 2009.
