Vermaelen played in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
After a great start to the season so far Arsenal hit a stumbling block in the Premier League on Sunday when they lost 1-0 to Manchester United.
The most significant news before the match was that Per Mertesacker had picked up a training ground bug and therefore would be replaced by captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian had not started a league match at all up until that point and Gunners fans were worried about the breakup of the defensive partnership of Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
This was with good reason as Vermaelen struggled to maintain Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie and did not have a great game.
However, the 27-year-old has sought to thank supporters on Instagram despite the fact that they lost this important match.
‘Disappointing result yesterday but still going strong! The fans were fantastic. #afc’
Arsene Wenger will probably be wanting to bring Mertesacker back as soon as possible however and may be glad of the international break so that the defender has more time to recover.
