If Mourinho gets his way the Blues could look a whole lot different.
It can’t be said that returning Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho doesn’t make tough decisions and the possible arrival of Wayne Rooney, coupled with expected departures, could make the starting XI completely different.
Despite impressive seasons for the Blues both Juan Mata and David Luiz have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge, whilst troubled striker Fernando Torres could also be axed.
Not only that but last time Mourinho managed the west London club between 2004 and 2007, stalwarts such as John Terry and Frank Lampard played a prominent role – as did now older stars Ashley Cole, Petr Cech and Michael Essien.
Yet whether these players, who are now all well until their 30s, will be used as much with youngsters like Marco Van Ginkel and Kevin De Bruyne vying for a place, is unknown.
Here’s how fanatix thinks things might look in 2013/14 under the ‘Special One.’
GK – Cech: With only veteran Mark Schwarzer for competition the Czech Republic No.1 will keep his place.
RB – Azpilicueta: Perhaps the least convincing of the bunch and one that could be dropped in favour of Ivanovic at full-back.
LB – Cole: Despite being 32 Cole is still one of the best full-backs in the country.
CB – Ivanovic: Mourinho is a big fan and the Serb is extremely sturdy at the back.
CB – Cahill: Another who is less certain but with no Luiz and Terry often injured, it could be Cahill’s year.
DM – Essien: Loaned to Mourinho’s Real Madrid side last year and the Portuguese is a huge admirer, expected to be straight back in the starting XI.
CM – Ramires: Although the manager and Lampard have a close relationship, at 35 the Englishman is likely to be used more sparingly and Ramires is the perfect fill-in.
RW – Hazard: Had a great first season and should revel under the new boss.
LW – Shurrle: Chelsea didn’t spend nearly £20m on the German to sit on the bench and will be a great foil to Hazard.
CAM – Oscar: Another who impressed in 2012/13 and could move more centrally with no Mata.
ST – Rooney: The big if. We know the Blues are interested but will they get their man?
