The out-of-favour Vermaelen turns 28.
It’s been a difficult season for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen so far in 2013/14, with the defender firmly behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker for a place in the starting XI.
The defeat at Old Trafford to Manchester United on Sunday was the Belgian’s first start in the Premier League this campaign and that was only because Mertesacker had picked up a bug.
However, despite the fact that Vermaelen is clearly not one of manager Arsene Wenger’s favourites at the moment, the centre-back still took the time out to thank Gunners fans on the player’s 28th birthday.
Thank you for all your kind birthday messages today!

Vermaelen is also struggling for a place on the international stage as well, as the Belgium manager has Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany, Atletico Madrid new boy Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham Hotspur also available at the back.
With the national team playing in their first World Cup since 2002 next summer in Brazil, the defender will want to be part of the squad that could make history in South America.
