It’s a battle between two NFC North rivals on Sunday as the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field hoping to top the division.
Both teams are 1-1 ahead of Week 3, with the Packers hitting back last weekend against the New York Jets after dropping their opener to the Seattle Seahawks.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of 42 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets, finding receiver Jordy Nelson nine times for a career-high 209 yards.
With the duo linking up brilliantly, star Lions receiver Calvin Johnson knows that his team have to find a way of limiting them while he will look to do the damage on the other side of the ball.
“It’s a big game. It’s a divisional game,” Johnson said of Sunday’s showdown.
“It’s a home game for us, so we definitely want to take care of our home field. At the same time, we want to take care of our divisional games whenever they come.”
After defeating the New York Giants in Week 1, Detroit lost to the Carolina Panthers last weekend and will have to overcome a horrendous record against their divisional rivals, which has seen them win just four times in 27 attempts.
However, they will take confidence from their 40-10 victory last season at Ford Field, although that was with Rodgers sidelined and the Packers ace is very much back in the picture.
It will undoubtedly be a significant battle between Rodgers and Matthew Stafford on Sunday, along with both Nelson and Johnson looking to steal the show from a receiving point of view.
While it’s still too early in the season to suggest that this is a decisive clash for the NFC North, the victor will undoubtedly take a big confidence boost from it.
