Five things to take away from the Etihad Stadium stalemate.
The story at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon was all about Frank Lampard, who came off the bench against the club where he spent 13 successful years to earn a late point for ten-man Manchester City after Andre Schurrle had put Chelsea ahead following Pablo Zabaleta’s sending off.
To focus on Lampard is to ignore a game that, despite a tedious first half, developed into an entertaining contest, however – here are five things that we took from the 1-1 draw:
Diego Costa can be stopped
Manchester City became the first team to even get close to shackling the previously irrepressible Diego Costa this season, with centre back pairing Vincent Kompany and debutant Eliaquim Mangala getting tight to their man, closing him down at every opportunity and generally starving Costa of any opportunity to impact the match – other than getting Pablo Zabaleta sent off.
