The news today that Chelsea have completed the signing of club legend Didier Drogba on a free transfer has given Everton a boost, according to the Express, who suggest that the Toffees are ready to offer £18 million for the Stamford Bridge outcast.
The Belgian has likely fallen down into fourth position in the Chelsea pecking order, behind Drogba, Diego Costa and Fernando Torres, meaning that Jose Mourinho could be tempted to cash in on the Belgian international who has struggled to impress his Portuguese manager, despite fine loan spells at Goodison Park and with West Bromwich Albion.
The former Anderlecht man broke the 15 goal barrier for Roberto Martinez’s side last season and is rated as one of the finest young strikers in Europe, which would make his capture on a permanent deal a stunning coup for the Spaniard and his team.
Everton have been quiet in the transfer market this summer, which could also mean that the club are keeping their powder dry ahead of a potential move for Lukaku.
An £18m move for the player would smash Everton’s transfer record, which currently stands at £15m for midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Standard Liege – who they later sold for a significant profit to Manchester United.
