The Toffees eye up potential Marouane Fellaini replacement…
Everton are chasing Manchester City’s 32-year-old midfielder Gareth Barry, reports the Express.
Roberto Martinez’s new side want Manuel Pellegrini’s Ctiy anchor man, who is available on loan.
The Chilean manager is happy to let the midfielder go after bringing in Fernandinho from Shakhtar for £30m. The Sky Blues also have Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia and Jack Rodwell occupying the centre-midfield slots, and Pellegrini no longer needs Barry.
Martinez has so far turned to his old club Wigan for new recruits, bringing in Arouna Kone, Antonin Alcarez and Latics loanee Joel Robles. A move for Barry however, could be with the few of replacing Belgian powerhouse Marouane Fellaini, who is a top target for Manchester United.
Martinez is not confident of keeping the 25-year-old midfielder, who feels he should be playing Champions League football at this point in his career.
Barry, while nowhere near as dynamic as Fellaini, would prove a solid replacement for the Belgian. Barry is often criticised for his lack of creativity, but what the Englishman lacks in imagination, he more than makes up for with defensive attributes and consistency.
The anchorman looks set to join Everton on loan, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
