Southall is not happy at the way the Red Devils have conducted themselves.
Everton legend Neville Southall has given an opinion on Manchester United’s pursuit of Leighton Baines and criticises ex-Toffees boss David Moyes.
United submitted a double bid of £28m for both Baines and Marouane Fellaini, which the Merseyside club rejected as ‘derisory and insulting’ and Southall agrees with that sentiment, as well as that the left-back should be retained at all costs.
“The way David Moyes has gone about it stinks. The entire world knows Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines are worth a lot more than the £28million offered and Moyes is disrespecting Everton,” the former goalkeeper was quoted in the Daily Mail.
“It wouldn’t have happened under Ferguson.
“If Baines goes, our chairman will be lynched. It’s the equivalent of telling the Everton fans, ‘Stuff you, we’re not interested in what you think, we want the money.’
“If Fellaini goes, not as many people will be bothered. They love Baines because he’s been great – a model pro – and letting him go would be a real kick in the teeth to Everton fans.”
Baines has been one of the best players in the Premier League since a £6.5m transfer from Wigan Athletic in 2007 and has been named in the PFA Team of the Year twice in that time, including in 2013.
The 28-year-old played every single Premier League match for the club last season; scoring five goals and providing seven assists and is arguably ahead of Ashley Cole in the pecking order for England.
Losing Baines would certainly be extremely unpopular with the Goodison Park faithful and new boss Roberto Martinez will do all the Spaniard can to keep hold of the full-back.
