Scot describes speculation as ‘tosh’!
David Moyes has angrily dismissed suggestions that new Everton signing Leroy Fer is a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.
Manchester City vs Liverpool tickets are still available for the match at the Etihad Stadium on 3 February!
Fer is expected to complete an £8.6m move to Goodison Park before Thursday’s transfer deadline, despite problems with the 23-year-old’s medical delaying the deal.
The FC Twente midfielder is nicknamed ‘the Bouncer’ in Holland because of his imposing frame and it has been mooted that the Netherlands international is a long-term replacement for the equally powerful Fellaini.
“I read something about him replacing Fellaini and that’s the biggest load of tosh I have heard,” said the Everton boss.
“That’s nonsense, whoever wrote or said that.
“They are different types of players. No, that’s not the reason for bringing him, that’s for sure.”
Coveted Belgium international Fellaini has been on fine form for the Toffees this season, bagging eight Premier League goals to date.
The 25-year-old stunned Everton fans by admitting in August that he could leave Merseyside as soon as this month but the former Standard Liege player now looks certain to stay put until at least the summer, despite Moyes’ admission he would be sold at the ‘right’ price.
However, Fellaini has hinted that he wants to play Champions League football sooner rather than later and, if Everton fail to beat Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool to a place in the top four, the big-haired star could leave in the summer, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man United all interested.
Moyes, though, is confident that Fer can give the Toffees the required lift to help them finish above their rivals.
“I felt that we are in a really strong position and that we should try and strengthen that position and stay there if we can,” he added.
“I would hate to look back and think I hadn’t given that a go or made any attempt to do that.
“The squad needs help. I think the squad has done brilliant to get where it has got, but it could do with one or two additions.”
