Alastair Cook’s England take to the field for the last time before the first Ashes Test starts with Australia on July 10 when they go head-to-head with Essex.
Cook knows Chelmsford well as the skipper plays his domestic cricket with the county, but the Three Lions leader will be doing his side no favours today as the English look to get match ready.
With less than two weeks to go until the start of the highly anticipated Ashes series with the Aussies, this match with Essex will be a vital warm-up.
Although Cook and head coach Andy Flower will be almost sure of their starting XI for that encounter with the Aussies at Trent Bridge, a few batting issues still remain unresolved.
After an average two Tests against New Zealand in May Somerset opener Nick Compton has fallen out of favour on the international scene, although strong batting performances with his county means Compton has not been forgotten.
Meanwhile 22-year-old Joe Root has impressed since making the step up to the national side and the Yorkshireman is tipped to move up from No.4 in the order to open with Cook.
Another positive for England will be the return of Kevin Pietersen for this tie, as the batsman has been out for over two months with a knee injury.
Pietersen was due to make his international return in the second Twenty20 with New Zealand on Thursday, but the match was washed out so Essex will now feel the brunt of the explosive player who has already scored 177 for Sussex on his professional return last week.
