After the first game of the five-match one day international series between England and India was washed out on Monday this is effectively the start of contest.
Constant rain in Bristol at the start of the week ensured no play was possible, but the forecast is better for this encounter – until early afternoon at least.
It will be an opportunity for Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales to show what he can do in the 50-over format, having only been given the chance in Twenty20 cricket for the Three Lions up until now.
Hales is expected to open with captain Alastair Cook, meaning veteran of this format Ian Bell will have to drop down the order to accommodate him.
Nearly all the home side’s players are fighting for their place though with the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia less than six months away.
The English have been shaky in ODIs for some time, but are facing an Indian team on the back of having defeated them 3-1 in the Test series.
Since then the tourists have appointed Ravi Shastri as team director, with Duncan Fletcher remaining as coach for the time being at least.
Several changes have been made to MS Dhoni’s squad after the five-day failure, with the most prominent arrival being batsman Suresh Raina.
