England will resume its first innings at The Oval on 247-4 but the rate in which those runs have been scored which was the big talking point ahead of the fourth day’s play.
With Australia’s imposing total of 492 declared on the board and the likelihood of rain on the second to last day of the English summer, the Three Lions had no plans in trying to push the pace.
On day three the home side only scored 215 from its 98 overs while Australia were only able to secure four wickets, which in all made for a slow day’s cricket.
Ryan Harris and Mitchell Starc continued their impressive form of the series, with the left-armer earning the wickets of the out of form Jonathan Trott for 40 and Kevin Pietersen for 50.
Harris again continued the summer of woe for England captain Alastair Cook as he scored what has been his average to date in the Ashes, with just 25 runs coming from his blade.
While England have wrapped up the series the negative tactics by Cook and his men has raised some eyebrows, especially with the return series just around the corner in Australia in November.
Even past English players and captains called for more urgency to try and give the side a chance of securing an important 4-0 psychological advantage over the Australians.
Ian Bell (29 not out) and Chris Woakes (15 not out) will resume their innings’ as the game ambles along to an unknown outcome.
