Australian spinner Nathan Lyon was the big talking point from the first day’s play at Chester-le-Street, after he took 4-42 to put his side well on top.
Continuing the the fight they showed at Old Trafford, the touring did not let the lost toss deter them as the off-spinner continued to stare down an, at times, testing opponent, especially in the case of Kevin Pietersen.
However, it was Lyon and his team that had the last laugh as the Three Lions were guilty of several lose shots as they crumbled to be 238-9 at the end of day one.
Despite several loose shots by the England batsmen, Lyon and the rest of the Australian attack were commended for continuing the pressure the home side.
Also going in Australia’s favor was a much-improved use of their reviews as they came away with two successful challenges – a marked difference from earlier in the series.
Alastair Cook and his men were criticised for their loose strokeplay, with some wondering if they are happy to have retained the Ashes, despite all of the pub chest beating about trying to win the series, rather than merely draw it.
Australia finally look to have a better balance with their side, with their bowling attack having variety despite left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc being dropped for the game.
The away side will get a chance to bat early on day two, and their best test will be to show the pitch at Durham is not full of demons.
And if the Australians can bat as they did in the first innings in Manchester, England will have a tough time climbing back into contention in the Test.
