The 2013 Ashes is under-way and what a first day it was between England and Australia at Trent Bridge with 14 wickets falling before close of play.
Alastair Cook won the toss and decided his Three Lions side would bat in what was the 28-year-old’s first outing as skipper in this prestigious series.
However, Cook’s decision looked to have backfired when Aussie seamer James Pattinson had the captain caught behind for 13.
Peter Siddle joined the party by dismissing fellow opener Joe Root before lunch and then the bowler took apart England’s top order in the afternoon session.
No fewer than five of the home side’s top seven batsmen fell to Siddle, with Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell and Matt Prior sent back to the pavilion without much resistance.
Jonny Bairstow showed flickers of a fight back but the English were eventually all-out for just 215.
Yet in reply the Baggy Greens did not fare much better and Steven Finn made short work of the new opening partnership of Chris Rogers and Shane Watson, by dismissing the latter and then Ed Cowan in successive balls.
James Anderson dealt with Rogers and danger-man Michael Clarke, embarrassing the Aussie skipper by sending him back with a duck.
The day finished with the tourists on 75-4 and all to play for going into the second day, with Steve Smith looking settled on 38 not-out.
