Welbeck was made available for transfer by United recently and, despite featuring in recent games against MK Dons and Burnley, the England international has looked set for a move away from Old Trafford, with a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Everton reportedly interested.
Arsenal are the club who have won the race, however, after dramatically entering into the chase for Welbeck on transfer deadline day after the need for a striker was highlighted by Yaya Sanogo’s performance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium.
Welbeck came through the youth system at Old Trafford and broke into the first team following a successful loan spell at Preston North End, initially impressing with his strength, pace and work rate and becoming a player favoured by Sir Alex Ferguson.
His stock at the club has dropped since the departure of Ferguson, however, and he has been on the fringes under van Gaal so far, potentially explaining Welbeck’s desire to push through the move to the Emirates Stadium today on a permanent basis.
