Down:
Clemson – The only saving grace in their loss could have been a loss by Florida State, but after seeing their key rivals for the ACC title win convincingly against a powerful offense like Oklahoma State, Clemson’s chances of even competing for the ACC title may have gone up in smoke.
South Carolina – The only top 10 team to lose in the opening week, the Gamecocks are in big trouble as they enter their next game against the surging Georgia Bulldogs in two weeks from now. South Carolina is also one of only two SEC teams to lose to an SEC opponent this early in the season.
Wisconsin – One of only two Big 10 teams to lose in the opening week – the other being Northwestern – the Badgers have a lot of catching up to do if they want to compete against Nebraska after the Cornhuskers dominated FAU.
The Mountain West Conference – Not considered one of the FBS power conferences like the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Pac 12 or SEC, the Mountain West has been purged of a lot of its most talented schools as they move to the better conferences. Nonetheless, the best schools from the past few years, Fresno State and Boise State, both lost their opening games.
UCF – There may still be time for UCF to climb back on top of the AAC in time to save their conference title chances, but a close early loss to Penn State really hurts the team’s chances of being in the top 25 this year.
