The Chicago Bulls host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night in a clash between two of the favourites to top the Eastern Conference this season.
Chicago got off to the perfect start on Wednesday night with a commanding win over the New York Knicks, with Derrick Rose, Pau Gasol, Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott amongst others all starring.
It will give the entire roster confidence moving forward, but in contrast, the same can’t be said for the Cavaliers who lost to the Knicks on Thursday.
Despite an explosive atmosphere at Quicken Loans Arena with the return of LeBron James, the ‘King’ and Co. could not produce a winning performance as Carmelo Anthony spoiled the party.
Now, the Cavs must quickly move on and regroup ahead of facing their toughest rivals this season, and it promises to be an intriguing early clash between two championship contenders.
The pair met in pre-season with Cleveland coming out on top, but this game will be expected to be different with less minutes being managed and the top names on both sides playing with a competitive edge.
Jimmy Butler remains sidelined for the Bulls with a thumb injury which is a blow for coach Tom Thibodeau, but he will hope that the rest of the roster is capable of dealing with his absence on both ends of the court.
James hit 5 of his 15 shots on Thursday for 17 points, and although both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love ended the game in double digits, the Cavs still lacked the kind of chemistry and cohesiveness that they will need to win this season.
The Bulls arguably have that edge on them at this early stage, and they will look to make the most of it on Friday night to further establish themselves as the team to beat in the East and raise more doubts about how the Cavs will piece their talented roster together.
