The Los Angeles Lakers will be bidding for a three-game winning streak when the Chicago Bulls visit the Staples Center on Sunday.
The Lakers (18-32) snapped a seven-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over Cleveland and Philadelphia respectively, with veteran point guard Steve Nash providing a timely boost as he celebrated turning 40.
“I thought I could play well, I could contribute,” said Nash, who has played two of the last three since missing 39 straight games with back problems.
“At this point, I don’t take anything for granted. It’s a grind for me to get ready to play every day. I’m just thrilled I can move out there without restriction and help my team.”
Assuming he is healthy enough to play in consecutive games, Nash will be a fundamental part of coach Mike D’Antoni’s plans of helping the franchise avoid a first five-game home losing streak since 2006.
Unfortunately, the gloss of this game has been taken off of given the injured absentees on both sides, with Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol all missing.
However, there was a thrilling finish to their last meeting as Taj Gibson’s buzzer beating lay-up gave Chicago a 102-100 home victory in an entertaining overtime contest.
D.J. Augustin had 27 points and Joakim Noah had 17 with 21 rebounds, while Nick Young had a season-high 31 points for the Lakers.
Despite the lack of genuine superstars on both teams, this will undoubtedly be a thrilling encounter with both desperate to get the W.
Los Angeles are arguably looking at the bigger picture and thinking about building a competitive roster for next season, while Chicago still remain in the hunt for the third seed in the Eastern Conference.
Nevertheless, the hosts will be eager to give their home crowd something to cheer about with a morale-boosting win over a giant from the East.
