Who the Blues should bring in to boost their title credentials.
Chelsea have been steady if nothing else since Jose Mourinho returned to take the reigns after a six-year absence at the start of the current term.
They are by far the complete product as yet and the 50-year-old could well be busy once again in the January transfer window – here are three candidates that could make them title contenders.
Fabio Coentrao
Ashley Cole finally appears to be feeling the left-back’s age and has not looked like the usually unflappable defender fans are used to this season.
Therefore Mourinho may be looking into other options on the left side of defence, with the average Ryan Bertrand the only other person available.
With Fabio Coentrao being on the verge of leaving Real Madrid in the summer, the Portugal international would probably be open to a move in January and worked with Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Wayne Rooney
The Blues made no secret of the fact that they tried to sign the forward during the summer and with their current crop of strikers failing, they may well be back in the New Year.
United will not want to sell – particularly as the Englishman has been in great form – but Rooney has made it clear before that the 27-year-old would leave Old Trafford and working with Mourinho is an attractive option for many players.
Xabi Alonso
Mourinho is a huge fan of the Spaniard and Alonso was instrumental during Madrid’s success when the Portuguese boss was in charge.
At 31-years-old the midfielder would hardly be a signing for the future, but the manager has always been about the here and now and Alonso is used to English football having excelled at Liverpool.
The west London club lack a steady force in defensive midfield – with Frank Lampard and Ramires having to adapt to play there – and the Spain international could be just that man.
