Mou wanted Tottenham star during Real reign.
Jose Mourinho has revealed he wanted to sign Tottenham’s Gareth Bale for Real Madrid last summer.
The Welsh forward is widely expected to join Los Blancos in a world record deal this month but Mourinho, now Chelsea boss, says the club’s interest in Bale is nothing new.
“I asked the club to buy him last season but it was not possible,” the Portuguese told ESPN.
Real are reportedly willing to pay up to £105m to bring the 24-year-old to the Spanish capital and, despite the staggering fee, Mourinho believes the Wales international will be a fine addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
“It looks like it is happening this season so I am happy for them because they have got a fantastic player but, of course, the numbers are huge numbers and the kid has to go now and there’s pressure to prove that he’s worth that investment.
“I think he’s a fantastic player and the way my Real Madrid was playing, I think it was an easy player to fill a space and to get into that tactical dynamic,” Mourinho added.
“I don’t know what Carlo is thinking now but Carlo is an experienced coach and for sure will get the best out of him.”
