Chelsea could potentially sell Spanish attacking midfielder Juan Mata now the January transfer window has opened, reports the Mirror.
Although Jose Mourinho wants Mata to stay at Stamford Bridge, he has admitted that Chelsea would be willing to speak to him about a potential move away from the club if it was in the player’s best interests.
“I want to keep him. I want to keep him. I don’t want him to go,” the Portuguese boss said.
“That’s my opinion, my wish. But my door is open and the club’s door is open too. When a player wants to speak with us we are there waiting.”
Despite winning Chelsea’s Player of the Year award for two consecutive seasons, Mata has dropped down the pecking order under Mourinho this term. The Portuguese boss has preferred Oscar and Eden Hazard in the attacking midfield positions, and now is giving much more game time to £30m Brazilian Willian, too. In fact, Mata has only been given 12 starts in the Premier League and Champions League combined, and is reportedly discontent with his lack of playing time.
With the World Cup in Brazil fast approaching, the 25-year-old is desperate for guaranteed first-team football to secure his place in Spain’s squad. Due to his pedigree and wonderful talent, there will likely be a whole host of suitors should Mata try and force a move away from the club.
