The England international may be convinced to stay if the Spaniard joins.
Chelsea’s £37m sale of Juan Mata to Manchester United could backfire as Wayne Rooney will be convinced to stay at Old Trafford due to the arrival of the Spaniard, according to the Mirror.
The Blues have been interested in bringing Rooney to Stamford Bridge for some time and even had two bids for the forward rejected by United in the summer.
The England international is approaching the last year of his contract with the Red Devils and is thinking about leaving the club.
Therefore the Premier League champions would need to cash in on the 28-year-old before the attacker entered that last year – and would be worth less as a result.
The west London club saw an opportunity to ensure Rooney made to move to the English capital by sweetening the deal and allowing Mata to go the other way.
The Spain international has been moved down the pecking order at the Bridge since Jose Mourinho returned as manager and now Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Willian are all ahead of the 25-year-old for a starting place.
Yet Mata is clearly still a supremely talented attacking midfielder and with United in desperate need of creativity, the Spanish star is exactly the sort of player they need.
However, the arrival of the midfield ace is set to actually convince Rooney to stay, as it greatly boosts the Red Devils’ chances of making the Champions League places and also mounting a serious title challenge again next season.
