The forward won’t stay at Old Trafford even if Mata arrives.
Wayne Rooney has piled the misery on Manchester United by refusing to sign a new contract and has put Chelsea on alert as a result, according to the Sun.
The Blues have been interested in bringing Rooney to Stamford Bridge for some time and even had two offers for the England international rejected by the Red Devils in the summer.
The 28-year-old will enter the last year of his contract at Old Trafford at the end of this season and United are desperate to tie up a new deal before then.
They thought they could convince the forward to stay on with the expected arrival of Juan Mata in a £39m move from the Blues.
Yet even the presence of the Spain international won’t sway Rooney’s decision and the Premier League champions will now have to decide whether they want to cash in on the attacker or not.
Real Madrid have also emerged as an interested party in the pursuit of the Englishman and United are likely to be more open to letting the striker move abroad.
At the moment the club’s issue is convincing Rooney to extend his £250,000-a-week contract when the side are facing the very realistic prospect of missing out on Champions League football for the first time since the tournament’s re-branding in 1992.
The 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday leaves the Red Devils languishing in seventh position after 22 matches and a whopping 14 points off league leaders Arsenal.
