New signing Schwarzer thinks the forward would be a great purchase.
Chelsea’s latest signing Mark Schwarzer has admitted that Wayne Rooney would be a great acquisition from Manchester United.
The Blues revealed on Wednesday that the club had indeed tabled a bid for Rooney, although United rejected their offer.
But Schwarzer is hopeful that the Englishman will head to Stamford Bridge.
“I think over the years Chelsea have shown a tremendous amount of ambition and that just continues now by bidding for one of the top players in English football,” the 40-year-old told Sky Sports.
“He is definitely one of the best strikers in the world without a doubt and he would be an asset to any side.
“It is not my choice, but he is a phenomenal player and an asset to any side.”
The ‘keeper joined the west London side from local rivals Fulham this summer on a free transfer, having spent the last 15 years in the Premier League playing for both the Cottagers and Middlesbrough.
Schwarzer has played more matches in the English top flight than any other foreign player in history, with the Australian appearing in 504 league games to date.
The stopper will play second fiddle to Petr Cech at the Blues this season but with the Australia international now in his 40s, this is unlikely to bother the ‘keeper too much.
Rooney meanwhile has been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford since the 2012/13 campaign ended, when retired United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the striker had handed in a transfer request – although a switch to the Blues would be a shock.
