Fans to stay away from Stamford Bridge in attempt to force Benitez out.
Chelsea fans are set for an extraordinary boycott of the club in an attempt to force out interim manager Rafa Benitez according to The Daily Mail.
Fans of the London club are so disappointed with Benitez that they are intending to avoid the club altogether until he has left.
There is plenty of bad blood between Benitez and Chelsea, and it was a shock to many when club owner Roman Abramovich brought in the former Liverpool gaffer to replace Roberto Di Matteo.
Benitez has failed to inspire support from Chelsea fans since his first day at the club and has been undermined by the supporters through their minute long applause at every game on the 16th minute.
16 was the number of former boss Roberto Di Matteo, and the fans have made clear their dissatisfaction of Benitez replacing a fan favourite who guided them to the Champions League.
The former Liverpool boss’ history with the club dates back to when Jose Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea. The managers and the clubs developed a bitter rivalry, with Benitez famously saying ‘Chelsea is a big club. But I would never take that job, in respect for my former team at Liverpool, no matter what. For me there is only one club in England, and that’s Liverpool’, as well as criticsing Chlesea fans for their ‘lack of passion’ and ‘stupid plastic flags’.
Benitez is reportedly upset at the abuse he has been receiving but it appears both parties will get their way soon enough with Real Madrid set to offer Benitez an escape route by replacing former Blues boss Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu.
