The Blues set to swoop for Betis midfielder Benat.
Chelsea are preparing for life after Frank Lampard, according to The Daily Star, who report that the West London club have begun talks with Spanish side Betis over their Spanish international midfielder Benat.
With Lampard’s agent having now confirmed that Chelsea will not be offering the 34 year old player a new contract, the Blues are in the market for a quality midfielder to replace him.
Blues owner, Roman Abramovich, has apparently sanctioned the move and, though a £8 million bid has reportedly already been rejected, is prepared to release a significant outlay in the hopes of sealing the player’s signature.
The midfielder is certainly in the mould of Lampard, setting La Liga alight this season with his accurate passing and powerful long shots.
The player has scored four goals in sixteen games from midfield as the Andalusian club has risen up to 5th in the table.
They currently sit level on points with Malaga who occupy 4th and have surprised many this season by remaining in contention for the Champions League spots going into the new year.
Many Chelsea fans and players, both current and former, have expressed their dismay at the club’s failure to renew Lampard’s contract however it now seems certain the player is destined for a summer exit from the club.
