Blues are keen to bring Spaniard back to the Premier League.
New Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho wants to take Real Madrid midfield player Xabi Alonso to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mail.
The experienced Spain international has been at Santiago Bernabeu for the past four seasons now, having signed for the Liga giants from Liverpool for £30 million in Aug 2009.
And in the intervening four-year period the 31-year-old has been a mainstay in los Blancos’ midfield, featuring in 192 fixtures for Madrid, and scoring six goals in the process, including four strikes in 132 league encounters.
However, having so far refused to put pen to paper on the new two-year deal that Madrid had offered Alonso, whose contract in the Spanish capital only runs until June 30 2014, the player now looks set to depart the club when the summer transfer window finally reopens for business on July 1, with the Blues to be his new club.
