O’Higgins’ Cristian Cuevas close to Stamford Bridge switch.
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Chilean wonderkid Cristian Cuevas but are yet to agree a fee with the 18-year-old’s club O’Higgins.
Cuevas was one of the stars of the recent FIFA under-20 World Cup and has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge since February, long before Jose Mourinho returned to west London.
The left-sided player, who can operate in defence or on the wing, made seven appearances for O’Higgins in the Torneo Transicion last season.
“Next week we should know more details on Cristian’s future,” Chelsea’s representative in South America, Jorge Alvial told Chilean newspaper Latercera at the end of June.
Cuevas’ agent, Mauricio Valenzuela, claimed in February a deal was close and said Chelsea had been tracking his client for some time.
“The negotiations are very advanced with Chelsea,” Valenzuela is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
“There are still a few details, but the situation is very advanced.
“We have been working on this for a while, the idea is that players can leave Chile and be successful.
“Chelsea have been following him for a couple of years, and the offer was made due to his good performances.”
Teenage Cuevas is very quick and strong, and claims to be like Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and Chelsea’s own Ashley Cole, two of his favourite players.
