‘He looks in fantastic shape,’ says Mourinho.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has praised Fernando Torres following the striker’s sending off in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham.
Torres was shown a second yellow card with ten minutes remaining after an innocuous clash with Jan Vertonghen but could have been shown a straight red earlier in the second half for grabbing the Belgian’s face.
Despite the dismissal, Torres enjoyed a fine match, consistently stretching a Spurs defence that had conceded just one goal this season before the Blues’ visit and leaving Michael Dawson on the turf after a tricky run that ended in a fine point-blank save by Hugo Lloris.
Mourinho believes the 29-year-old is much changed from the player who flopped so spectacularly after a £50m move from Liverpool in January 2011 and says he was pleased with Torres’ display.
“On television I used to watch matches of Fernando at Chelsea and it looked to me that he was a bit heavy, a little slow,” Mourinho said.
“Now he looks in fantastic shape. And I think he played a very good game against Spurs.
“He knows that I am very happy with his performance.”
