Mourinho lavishes praise on summer signing…
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has heaped the praise on German attacker Andre Schurrle following the summer signing’s brilliant performance in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, reports the Sunday World.
Mourinho’s men battered Romanian side Steaua Bucharest 4-0, and Schurrle delivered his best performance so far in a Blue shirt.
With star player Eden Hazard out injured, the responsibility to drive at the Romanian defence lied firmly on Schurrle’s shoulders.
The young German flyer actually took on more players last night than the entire Steaua Bucharest team on his own, and was Chelsea’s stand out player, despite the fact that Ramires scored two goals.
“Schürrle was fundamental to this victory. He was the man. He penetrated their defence time and again and played great,” said Mourinho.
The 22-year-old has already won 25 caps for the excellent German national side, where he has scored seven goals.
He joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a large £18m fee in the summer, but has struggled to nail down a first-team place with the wealth of competition at Stamford Bridge. As well as Hazard, Schurrle has to compete with Juan Mata, Willian, Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar for a starting spot.
Mourinho clearly rates the young attacker though, and after his brilliant midweek performance, Schurrle could expect to be given another chance to play from the outset at the weekend away to Norwich.
