Chelsea are set to compete with Manchester City and FC Barcelona for one of the standout performers of the season in La Liga.
Chelsea are competing with FC Barcelona and Manchester City for the signing of Villarreal central defender Mateo Musacchio, according to the Daily Express.
The 23 year-old has been a revelation at the back for his club in La Liga, helping Villarreal to a draw with Real Madrid and was the standout performer in their narrow loss to FC Barcelona last weekend.
He has also played an important role in the Estadio El Madrigal outfit’s five clean sheets this season, and is being talked up as an option for the Argentina side for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil next summer, having already earned two caps for his country.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has recently hailed his club captain John Terry, stating that the former England captain can play on for a good few years yet, but Musacchio could certainly be a promising replacement.
The Villarreal star has earned plaudits for his positioning all season, with an impressive 3.3 interceptions per match in La Liga so far this term.
He also possesses good strength and timing in the tackle, and Villarreal may have a tough job keeping him with European giants FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City circling.
