Liverpool survived a late rally from Brighton to book their place in the next round of the Carling Cup.
Craig Bellamy scored his first goal of his second spell at the Merseysiders to give the visitors the early lead. The Welshman latched onto a neat pass from Luis Suarez before slashing the ball home.
The match remained 1-0 until the 80th minute when Kuyt rolled the ball off the inside the far post after being played in by Maxi Rodriguez though Brighton were awarded a spot kick in the closing stages after debutant Vicente was felled in the area. Ashley Barnes swept the ball into the top corner to set up a grandstand finish.
However, Gustavo Poyet’s side could not find the equaliser and it will be Liverpool – who also saw Steven Gerrard some of the bench for his first appearance this season – that will be in the hat for the next round of the League Cup.
