Two of the most storied franchises in the NBA face off on Friday night, as the Boston Celtics travel to the Staples Center to face the Los Angeles Lakers.
Despite the fact that these two franchises combine for 33 NBA championships, they both find themselves in difficult situations this season as they attempt to rebuild competitive rosters.
Both are likely to miss the playoffs in the same season for just the second time ever, as the Lakers (18-36) look to end a four-game losing streaking against a Celtics team (19-36) that hasn’t fared much better.
Kobe Bryant, Nick Young, Xavier Henry and Steve Nash are all expected to miss out, while Pau Gasol could provide coach Mike D’Antoni with some much needed positive news as he looks to make his return from a groin injury.
Nevertheless, they remain short of numbers and short of confidence as D’Antoni looks to encourage them to end the season positively heading into a summer where they likely make some key additions.
He is short-handed further after the decision to trade Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors earlier this week, and while he may have received pieces in return it remains to be seen what they can offer this year.
Meanwhile, the same could apply to Boston who ended speculation over a possible trade deadline deal for point guard Rajon Rondo who stays until the end of the season at least.
Having successfully recovered from an ACL injury, Rondo is expected to test free agency in the summer of 2015, but with promises of significant additions before then, it remains to be seen whether or not the Celtics decide to rebuild around him.
Although both teams are at a low point, they will be expected to battle hard for pride in this encounter, and it will be intriguing to see who comes out on top.
