Hoeness reveals why the German champions didn’t even bother with the ‘Special One.’
Jose Mourinho is never far away from controversy and the Chelsea boss is set to reignite a ongoing feud with Pep Guardiola when the Blues face Bayern Munich on Friday.
The two sides will battle it out in the Super Cup in Prague and Bayern’s president Uli Hoeness has added further fuel to the fire by stating that Guardiola is superior to Mourinho.
Following a year out after leaving Barcelona, the Spanish coach took over the reigns at the Allianz Arena from Jupp Heynckes this summer.
The deal had been tied up 12 months previously, after Guardiola stepped down at the Nou Camp and cooled what had been a tempestuous relationship with the Portuguese boss – who at the time was in charge at Real Madrid.
As if there wasn’t enough incentive going into Friday’s encounter, Hoeness has now stirred up the pot once again.
“Pep and Mourinho fought out an interesting battle in Spain over the course of several seasons and our coach came out victorious by a mile,” the president was quoted by goal.com.
“There’s always a certain tension between them. I did not speak to Pep about Mourinho, but they are not the best of friends.
“Fact is, though, that we didn’t try to sign Mourinho, but went for Guardiola. I’d say that we made a pretty clear statement with that.”
Along with the ongoing feud between the two managers, there is also the matter of revenge in the back of Bayern’s mind, having been beaten by the Blues on penalties in the 2012 Champions League final – the last time the pair met.
