A clause in Thomas Vermaelen’s deal that brought him from Arsenal to Barcelona requires a payment of €3.8m to be made to the Gunners if the Spaniards win the Champions League, reports Spanish publication Sport.
Vermaelen has not even played in an official game since he made the move from London last summer due to injury, so is proving to be an expensive bench warmer.
The Belgian’s transfer between the teams cost €10m as well as a €5m performance related bonus. Winning the Champions League could cost Barcelona even further, totalling €18.5m overall.
Although the 29-year-old has not played, he was able to attend the defeat Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Despite the 3-2 loss on the night, Barcelona advanced on a 5-3 aggregate. They will face Juventus in the final next month, and barring injuries to Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Jeremy Mathieu or Marc Bartra, he’s almost certain not to feature.
