Australia number three Shane Watson will undergo a fitness test ahead of the Boxing Day Test after being struck in the head by a short ball in training on Tuesday.
The all-rounder is being checked for signs of concussion and skipped a family day at the MCG, opting to stay in his hotel room.
Watson appeared visibly shaken after being struck by a James Pattinson delivery in the nets and immediately ended the session.
Australian selector Mark Waugh, speaking during commentary of Tuesday night’s Big Bash fixture in Hobart, said the under-pressure Watson should be ok to feature on Boxing Day.
“It was his last ball he was facing in the nets and it struck him somewhere near the temple region,” Waugh said.
“He was pretty much OK to start off with then he felt a little bit off colour back in his hotel room.
“So I believe he’s going to have a few tests overnight and we’ll see how he comes up in the morning so hopefully he should be OK to play in the Test match.”
