Mitch Marsh has been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test due to injury and will be replaced by in-form Queenslander Joe Burns.
Burns hit his highest first-class score of 183 last month against New South Wales.
The top order batsman has scored just shy of 3000 first-class runs at an average of 42.
Australia coach Darren Lehmann says he has not yet decided where the 25-year-old would fit into the batting order.
“I’ll have to speak to Steven [Smith], the skipper about that,” Lehmann is quoted as saying by ESPN.
“He can fit anywhere from 1 to 6. That’s the advantage with Joe, he can bat in the middle order or up high.
“We’ve got some flexibility there. It depends on which way we want to go.”
Ryan Harris is expected to regain his spot in the XI in place of Mitchell Starc, who struggled to make an impact in Brisbane.
AUSTRALIA SQUAD:
David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Steve Smith (C), Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle.
