Paul Smith will get a second chance at winning the WBO super-middleweight world title when he takes on Arthur Abraham in Berlin on Saturday night.
The controversy that the judges scorecards created in their first meeting back in September last year has resulted in the Merseysider getting a second shot, and he insists that he is much better prepared this time round.
Smith claims that training camp has gone perfectly, he is adamant that the 12 championship rounds of boxing now under his belt are hugely beneficial and this time round he goes into the fight knowing he can beat his rival as opposed to last time when he when he went in merely believing.
Nevertheless, the 32-year-old will need to produce a dominant performance to get the nod from the judges in Germany, although trainer Joe Gallagher has predicted a shoot-out between the fighters with either one of them claiming a stoppage.
‘King Arthur’ comes into this bout looking fitter and is unlikely to underestimate his opponent again, although he claimed in the press conference earlier this week that he wasn’t impressed by Smith in their first fight as he felt as though he won comfortably.
The reigning WBO champion is a heavy favourite to repeat his victory from last year, but Smith will be a dangerous prospect given that this fight could well be make or break for him at world level.
With Carl Froch holding the WBA title, James DeGale fighting for the IBF strap and George Groves mandatory for the WBC belt, the super-middleweight division is overflowing with British talent and Smith will be desperate to add his name to the mix.
Coverage of fight night from Berlin gets underway at 8.20 p.m. on Sky Sports 3, while Smith is expected to enter the ring at 9.45 p.m.
Smith will look to make a fast start and get his shots off early to slow Abraham down. However, the champ will be better prepared both mentally and physically this time round and so the danger is that Smith has missed his best opportunity at becoming a world champion.
As a result, expect Abraham to step up a gear in the championship rounds and claim a stoppage win late on.
