Mertesacker and Sanogo fell out ahead of the Liverpool match.
It was not a good weekend for Arsenal as after losing 5-1 to Liverpool in the Premier League it’s emerged that there was a bust-up between team-mates Per Mertesacker and Yaya Sanogo, reports the Telegraph.
The German was left with a black eye after falling out with Sanogo on the training ground, although the Gunners have been quick to play down the incident.
In fact the north London club said that the feud between the two players happened some time ago and that Mertesacker sustained the shiner after accidentally being elbowed by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Either way it is not good press for the side, who entered the first match of their difficult 11 days of fixtures with many saying this period could make or break their season.
In the next 10 days Arsene Wenger’s men face Manchester United in the league, the Reds again in the FA Cup and then the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich.
The humiliation they suffered at Anfield will have done little to convince the fans that the club can win their first piece of silverware since 2005 this term.
After the heavy defeat on Merseyside Chelsea leapfrogged Wenger’s side into top spot following a convincing 3-0 victory over Newcastle United, although fellow title rivals Manchester City failed to capitalise with a 0-0 draw at Norwich City.
The last thing the club needs at this difficult point is in-house fighting between their own players.
