Arsenal welcome Bayern Munich to Emirates Stadium in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the second successive year, with both teams having made clear improvements in the last twelve months.
The Gunners have brought a world class player to north London in Mesut Ozil, as well as some steel in the free transfer of Mathieu Flamini, and are involved in their first title challenge since the 2007/2008.
Bayern Munich meanwhile have appointed Pep Guardiola as manager, and the Spaniard has built on Jupp Heynckes’ work to create a formidable side built on the same tiki-taka style he employed when in charge of FC Barcelona.
No team averages more possession than preposterous 70.4% enjoyed by the Bavarian outfit, and Guardiola’s men also take the most shots per game in Europe’s biggest five leagues.
Unsurprisingly, they lead the Bundesliga, and the 16 point gap to second placed Bayer Leverkusen is indication of their superiority this season.
Arsene Wenger will be well aware of the danger of Bayern Munich, and will hope his team have learned the lessons from last year.
