Arteta reveals how much the Spaniard admires the controversial South American.
Now the season is in full swing Arsenal can look back at their campaign to date with a smile, as the north London side top the Premier League with 22 points from nine matches.
Since returning from injury vice-captain Mikel Arteta has played a big role for the club, but has revealed the midfielder’s admiration of a rival forward.
The Gunners were strongly linked with Liverpool star Luis Suarez this summer, but failed in their bid to sign the 26-year-old.
However, this does not mean that manager Arsene Wenger will not try again in the January transfer window and Arteta would clearly be a fan if the boss did.
“He is a tremendous player,” the 31-year-old told the Mirror.
“And he has shown a lot of character to get back after getting really criticised and on the front pages a lot.
“He has gone on to produce some great performances and his goal-scoring record is amazing.
“I like players like this. When they are on the floor and everyone is on them they stand up and prove themselves and I admire that.”
Suarez had to sit out the first six matches of the current season due to a ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last term.
Yet since returning to the Reds side the Uruguay international has been in fine form once again and has already netted six league goals – including a hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.
Arteta meanwhile is clearly hoping that Wenger reignites the interest that nearly saw the north London club land the attacker back in the summer.
